Irish whiskey tourism: spend up, visits concentrated

Irish whiskey distilleries hit 1.04 million visits in the year to June 2026. Visitors spend more than the 2016 plan expected. Too few of them leave Dublin.

Irish whiskey distillery visits 2017 to 2026 against the 2016 tourism plan. 1.04 million visits in the year to June 2026, against a plan of 1.94 million by 2025. About €50 spent per visitor, ahead of plan. One in three visitors don't drink on the day. 84% of visits went to Dublin and the Jameson sites in 2023.

Three things in the numbers

  • Spend is up a fifth, to about €50 a head. That is ahead of the industry's own 2016 tourism plan.
  • A third of visitors don't drink on the day. They are paying for the story, the shop and the place.
  • Dublin and the Jameson sites take over 80% of visits (84% in 2023). Most distilleries outside them see 1,000 to 7,000 visits a year.

So the growth is in what each visitor spends, not in how far they travel. Visits are still well short of the plan's 1.94 million by 2025.

What would spread it

  • Transport. Someone in every car has to drive. Shuttles and joint tickets would do more for a distillery off the bus routes than another ad.
  • The non-drinker. A third of visitors. Build the visit for them, not around them.
  • A count. One national number a year can't show whether the Irish Whiskey Way is spreading visits. Regional bands would.

Caveats

  • IWA figures are member surveys; 2024 to 2026 are years to June, and there is no calendar-2023 count.
  • Fáilte Ireland counts are self-reported, cover the Republic only, and not every distillery takes part.
  • On-site spend (IWA) and the plan's distillery tourism turnover are close measures, not identical ones. Plan years between its published points are interpolated.
